Top 4 Reasons Why Small Business Owners “Think They Don’t Need Digital Advertising”

As a managing partner for Adster Creative for the last 5 years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet dozens of business owners across Canada. In that time, I’ve met a wide variety of individuals ranging from small start-ups, to large corporations. One thing that’s always remained constant is over-coming objections.

Here’s my compilation of the 4 most popular objections to advertising as a whole I’ve come across for your dining and dancing pleasure:

1. I’ve been successful by word of mouth.

Let’s face it – we live in Alberta. Straight outta high school, you can get a job up North making some serious coin. Better yet, if you’re a business owner (specifically in the oil & gas / trades sector) it’s entirely possible you have created yourself a successful job, working in your own company. Now, don’t get me wrong, referrals are extremely powerful and every business loves referrals, but realistically it’s only 1 piece of the puzzle when it comes to generating revenue for your business.

If you’d like to take the next step, and work on your business, instead of for your business, it might be time to speak to an advertising agency. We’ve helped take small companies and grow them across Canada – true story, just ask Google!

2. If I do it myself, I’ll save money.

Since you live in Alberta, you’re also well aware of the adage ‘get the right tool for the job’. While doing it yourself may save you ‘money’ in the interim, what you’re really losing is your time. There’s no doubt that you’re the best of the best at what you do, but are you really saving money by doing something that you’re only 20% efficient at? Unless internet marketing really peaks your interest, hiring professionals not only saves you time, but will make you substantially more money when done right and a creative strategy is employed.

3. I don’t want to grow; I’m happy where I’m at

Not to be blunt… but if you’re really ‘happy with where you’re at’ why did you even contact an advertising agency? Is there maybe perhaps, more to this story?

4. Advertising is too expensive

Advertising is an investment in your business. When it comes to the internet, online advertising offers one of the easiest methods to track return on investment. We have tons of cool tools at our disposal like conversion tracking and goals tracking that are intended to show you growth over time. While good advertising agencies aren’t what I’d call ‘in-expensive’ – the returns you see far outweigh the initial costs to get a successful campaign started.
